WHY NORTHERN PORTUGAL ?
Also known as the Higher Minho this fertile and charming region hides some of the most breathtaking land and sea scapes in the country. The region has maintained its strong traditions, open air markets and religious festivities pervade everyday life. Throughout the year, it is easy to find a festivity or a colourful parade in honour of a patron saint. This region is semi-rural and unspoilt, yet with splendid opportunities for cultural and historical sightseeing. For walkers and wildlife enthusiasts a visit to the National Parks of Portugal and Spain should not be missed It is said that any itinerary you make or any road you take in this region leads you to a delightful surprise. The fertile farms and estates have been handed down within families for centuries.
WHERE WE ARE
There are some excellent maps on this site which pinpoint where we are located
Our house and small holding are a few miles from Valenca, which is the main market town, very close to the Spanish border. We are located in a tiny village called Rio Torto, Fontoura, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The view from the bedroom windows has been described as "one to die for"
We are only 7 minutes drive from Valenca and 8 from the Spanish border. Valenca is a buzzing shopping border town that is divided into two areas, the old and the new. The old provides a shopping experience aimed at the Spanish and the very few tourists and the new for the needs of the locals. Wednesday is market day, I will say no more, it has to be seen to be believed, a great shopping experience. The closest Spanish town to our home is Tui, just across the border. With both countries belonging to the EEC there are no custom formalities
